PTES Golden Great Nut Hunt
Go on a Great Nut Hunt to help dormice
The People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES for short) (along with Natural England) has launched the third Great Nut Hunt to find out where dormice are across the country.   Volunteers from previous surveys sent in hazel nuts from 2,000 sites & helped PTES discover 500 woodlands where dormice reside in England and Wales.  This can be a great family activity, so go on - sign up & go nut hunting!  (PTES also have other wildlife surveys they need help with)

Valentine's day is coming on 14 Feb...why not adopt an animal as a Christmas present?
If you can't think of the perfect gift to buy animal lovers this Christmas, why not adopt an animal for them?  Our sister site at Giving Gifts has tons of links to charities who have an adopt an animal scheme.   Before you buy something you know your loved one will just put in a cupboard, consider adopting an animal for them.

Flying seagull
Big Garden Birdwatch - 30/31 January 2010
Every year, the RSPB organises the Big Garden Birdwatch, giving folk like you & me a chance to take part in one of the biggest bird surveys around.  All you have to do is to sit in your garden or local park for an hour on one of the days and make a note of the different birds you see - and send your findings off to the RSPB.  Last year, over half a million people decided to take part.  If your lack of bird knowledge is making you worry because you can barely tell a blackbird from a robin, fear not.  The RSPB has an excellent resource on-line to help you mug up the more popular birds well in time for the weekend.  Take part & put your new found bird learning to the test!  (And for teachers & anyone involved in leading young groups, the Big School Birdwatch takes place from 18 January to 1 February 2010 - tons of resources for & lots of real win-wins for kids & nature.)

Stop whaling
Save the Whale Week - 1st - 7th February 2010
The WDCS (Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society) is holding its Save the Whale Week from 1-7 February 2010
.  Commercial whaling was banned in 1983.  Since that time, over 30,000 whales have been killed by 3 counties alone. Help the WDCS to stop whaling in this week.  There are many ways to take part, including a wear Red to Work day. There are separate site pages for young people who want to help save the whale.

World Wetlands Day
Why not visit wetlands near you to celebrate the beauty of wetlands and acknowledge their importance to the environment?  Or simply aim to find out more about wetlands and their importance to animals & people alike. Half the world's wetlands have already been lost. Visit the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust for more info.
Trouble
National Pet Month
Take part in National Pet Month which runs from 3 April to 3 May 2010.
Last year, over 450 events around the UK raised £13,000 for 37 animal charities.  One of the month's aims is to promote repsonsible pet ownership, but also to make people aware of the benefits of pets for people & people for pets!  Find out how to take part
